Information Systems Security Architect
Basic Function/Purpose:
The function of this position is to apply engineering and problem solving skills to develop solutions to complex problems in the electric power delivery process related to grid modernization. This position produces solutions based on a strong background in information security, enterprise information architecture, and familiarity with utility enterprise information models, common utility communication protocols and information modeling standards, a working knowledge of advanced sensing and control, renewable energy, distributed resources, demand response programs, advanced metering infrastructure, distribution automation, distributed computing, electrical, mechanical and information systems integration, enterprise information architecture, cyber security, and related disciplines and methodologies.
The position involves assisting utility clients in requirements capture, requirements analysis, developing information system architecture based on requirements, developing bid specifications, writing reports and preparing project deliverables. Information security is a substantial focus of this position requiring a strong understanding of information security principles, policy development, and risk management. This position will also be responsible for assisting senior staff in the design, implementation, and documentation of embedded network communication devices, Microsoft web server based applications, database applications, and other client applications on Linux and Microsoft platforms.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of the Smart Grid as defined by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and related industry consortia
- Self-starter who works with minimal supervision and can interface effectively with clients and work positively in a team environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as presentation skills to effectively communicate with clients, peers and management.
- Problem solving and continuous improvement skills
- Effective team player who is willing to accept a leadership role both internally and externally in collaborating on strategic initiatives and opportunities to drive business growth
- Possess a working knowledge of IEC Common Information Model (CIM)
- Strong technical knowledge of system studies and analysis, as well as advanced technology in chosen field of expertise
- Strong organizations skills and working knowledge of project management principals
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and consistently meet deadlines
- Knowledge of utility SCADA systems, databases, and distribution automation.
- Working knowledge of data analysis techniques.
- Ability to travel out of town on assignments of more than two days in duration.
Education:
- BS in Computer Science or Software Engineering, MS preferred from ABET accredited institution.
- CISSP certification required.
- Other certifications as deemed necessary may be required.
- Demonstrated proficiency in productivity and data analysis software including: Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word. Knowledge of Microsoft Access and Project a plus.
Experience:
3-5 years of business and staff management experience in the electric utility industry working with a supplier to the industry or as a principal consultant within a consulting firm providing Cyber Security services to the electric power industry, or other applicable Cyber-Security related experience.
A Utility Information Systems Security Architect will:
- Strong background in computer science fundamentals
- Solid understanding of information security principles
- Understanding of methodologies for architecting large systems
- Understanding of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and UML tools (e.g. MagicDraw, Rational Rose)
- Understanding of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)
- Solid understanding of formal software requirements gathering and documentation methodologies
- Solid understanding of writing effective use cases
- Understanding of communication protocol design and applications, including the OSI model
- Understanding and experience in XML, XML manipulation tools such as XMLSpy
- Understanding and experience in Web Services
- Fluent in C, C++
- Solid understanding of Microsoft Software Development tool chains
- Knowledge of Java, C#, Visual Basic
- Some knowledge of LINUX and GNU tool chain
- Some understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals
- Some understanding of embedded systems development
- Strong familiarity with use of Microsoft Office Suite components (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
- Solid writing skills
- Represent the Company by publishing papers, articles and as a lecturer on Cyber Security related topics and technologies.
- Review reports prepared by others for accuracy, quality, and completeness.
- Work closely with other groups within and outside the Company
- Determine job costs and prepare proposals and quotations
- Continuously practice improving and perfecting technical and consulting skills

Power Systems Engineer
Basic Function: Conducting engineering studies on wind plants and utility power systems.
Education & Experience: Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) from an accredited ABET university with emphasis on power systems. A BSEE degree and extensive working experience in power systems may substitute for an advanced degree.
Skills:
- Excellent knowledge of conducting simulations and analytical studies of electric power systems including harmonic, transient, stability, and load flow analysis
- Excellent knowledge of at least two power system simulation tools such as EMTP-RV, ATP, Digsilent, PSCAD/EMTDC, PSS/E, GE PSLF, Simulink for Power Systems, ETAP, Cape, OpenDSS, SuperHarm, etc.
- Excellent communications and report-writing skills in English required
- Working knowledge in at least one high-level programming language (Matlab, VBA, Python, Java, C++, etc.)
- Working knowledge of data analysis techniques
- History of conference/journal publications desirable
- Experience with power electronics desirable
- Work with minimal supervision
- Attention to detail
- Minimum of three years of work experience in a field related to Power Systems
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Perform power system studies on wind plants and utility systems including harmonic analysis, transient analysis, temporary overvoltage/overcurrent analysis, ground fault settings, arc flash studies, short circuit studies, and simple protective device coordination
- Perform data analysis related to distributed generation and power quality
- Develop software tools to assist in power system studies and data analysis tasks
- Publish and present study results at meetings and conferences
- Assist other engineers with power system studies
- May perform power quality measurements at wind plants
- Perform routine work that conforms to all project/task requirements and that requires a basic understanding and application of engineering theories, standards, concepts, techniques, as well as, knowledge of engineering/industry codes and government regulations

Smart Grid Engineer
EnerNex has several openings related to Smart Grid Architecture and Engineering. These positions combine the disciplines of electric power engineering, communications technology, and enterprise information technology architecture to help design, build and implement the smart grid for our utility clients.
EnerNex is seeking qualified systems engineers with an interest in applying their problem solving skills in the energy sector to develop the next generation of the nations electric power generation, delivery, and utilization infrastructure.

Power Systems Engineer Internship
Basic Function:
Supporting engineering studies on wind plants and utility power systems.

Experience Level and Duration of Internship
Any experience level is considered. An applicant with an advanced degree (Masters or PhD) will work on more challenging tasks and will have more responsibilities than an applicant with a BSEE degree. The minimum duration of an Internship at EnerNex is three months; the maximum duration is six months.

Duties and Responsibilities
Project tasks and responsibilities will be selected based on the level of experience. For instance, a candidate with a BSEE degree will likely work on closely-supervised tasks that will advance his/her knowledge on how to use simulation and data analysis tools while a candidate who has (or is working towards) and advanced degree is expected to work on challenging projects with limited supervision. Tasks an Intern at EnerNex can expect to work on are listed below:
- Perform power system studies on wind plants and utility systems including harmonic analysis, transient analysis, temporary overvoltage/overcurrent analysis, ground fault settings, arc flash studies, short circuit studies, and protective device coordination.
- Perform data analysis related to bulk transmission, distributed generation, and power quality studies.
- Write engineering reports that document study results.
- Develop software tools to assist in power system studies and data analysis tasks.
- Perform routine work to meet project/task requirements.
