GridWiseTM is a vision of how advanced communications, information and controls technology can transform the nation's energy system—from customer loads through central generation—into a collaborative network whose participants exchange decision-making information as driven by market opportunities and system conditions dictate.
Erich Gunther, EnerNex principal consultant and CTO, is a member of the GridWise Architecture Council and was involved in the staging of the GridWise Constitutional Convention. This event took place December 6-7, 2005 in Philadelphia.
The GridWise Architecture Council gathers a team of experts with diverse, relevant industry backgrounds to articulate the guiding principles that constitute the architecture of a future, intelligent, transactive, energy system and see that GridWise activities remain true to these principles. This team was assembled by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability in cooperation with key stakeholders in the GridWise Alliance.
At the Constitutional Convention, the GridWise Architecture Council sought to convene an array of cross-industry representatives to establish a constitution that will guide the transformational impact of information technology advancement as it permeates the supply, delivery and consumption of electricity over the next 10-30 years to realize a self-sustaining, highly interactive and interoperable electric system. Keynote speakers for the Constitutional Convention included DOE Secretary Samuel Bodman, Senator Jeff Bingaman, California Energy Commission Chairman Joe Desmond, and Nora Mead Brownell, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
