Knoxville, Tenn., July 29, 2004 - EnerNex Corporation, an electric power engineering and consulting firm specializing in the development and application of new electric power technologies, has been awarded a contract by Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) to collect and publish data on the performance of energy storage demonstration projects conducted under the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Energy Storage Initiative. EnerNex will also conduct analyses of the system performance for each of the demonstration projects and will operate a web site to make information available to those interested in viewing their performance.
These demonstration projects will begin operation at various sites within the State of New York in 2005 and will be evaluated for at least an 18-month period. Each project operator provided information to NYSERDA and SNL on the data acquisition system to be utilized with the proposed demonstration. EnerNex will aid NYSERDA and SNL in reviewing the technical effectiveness of the data acquisition system to insure operational compatibility and to insure it can acquire and transmit appropriate data from the demonstration project site.
According to Jeff Lamoree, EnerNex President, the project fits well with the company's experience with integrating distributed resources with utility power systems and data acquisition, management, and analysis: "We have conducted similar projects in the past and have worked with a number of utilities and other clients to implement monitoring systems that can provide similar performance analysis and make data available over the Internet to interested parties. We are pleased to work with NYSERDA and SNL in undertaking this project."
Once the demonstration site data acquisition systems are selected, installed, and validated, EnerNex will conduct data collection and management using the system infrastructure for its NexMonitoring.com service, which provides web based data management and visualization for power system monitoring projects. EnerNex will host a web site that makes performance data from the demonstration sites available to the public. EnerNex will also provide analyses of project performance to NYSERDA and SNL.
Sandia National Laboratories conducts the Energy Storage System Program for the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Electric Transmission and Distribution. Its program mission is to develop advanced energy storage technologies that increase the reliability, performance, and competitiveness of electric power generation, transmission, and distribution. To support these mission goals, NYSERDA and SNL will provide system level operation and performance information, along with economic performance information, to the general public on each of the funded projects. This will help to increase the collective knowledge of energy storage systems and their operations, uses, benefits and potential issues; and accelerate the growth and maturation of the energy storage industry.
EnerNex Corporation provides engineering and consulting services, along with software solutions and customization, for energy producers, distributors, users, and research organizations. These are offered through practice lines focusing on electric power system studies and analysis, utility communication and automation, systems integration, and technology analysis and transfer. The company was established by Erich Gunther, Jeffrey Lamoree, and Robert Zavadil, who have more than 50 years of collective experience in the electric power industry and are all internationally recognized in their various areas of expertise.
Sandia National Laboratory is a multiprogram laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin company, for the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration. Sandia has major R&D responsibilities in national security, energy and environmental technologies, and economic competitiveness.
