A 34.5 kV distribution capacitor bank in Rhode Island had failed on several occasions. EnerNex conducted a comprehensive capacitor application study for National Grid to determine the cause of shunt capacitor. A harmonic study and a transient overvoltage study was conducted to determine the failure mode of the bank.
