EnerNex has conducted power quality monitoring of five Sweetwater Wind Plants to determine harmonic voltage and current distortion levels originating from within the plants and from the transmission system. The harmonic analysis of the five plants, using EMTP RV was performed to determine the harmonic interactions between the plants and the transmission system. The effects of all existing associated shunt compensation equipment on harmonic distortion levels was analyzed to determine if various configurations could lead to high harmonic distortion levels. The analysis provided a basis for determining compliance with IEEE 519 and the requirement for harmonic filters or capacitor detuning for lower harmonic distortion levels to acceptable levels.
