Alliant Energy uses a Metricom remote metering system for distribution SCADA functionality. There are approximately 1000 meters installed, which communicate via Power Line Carrier (PLC) with a Metricom radio transceiver. The transceivers use packet radio technology and communicate in a peer-to-peer network to one of the 27 gateway sites that provide connectivity to the Alliant WAN and then on to an Oracle database and relevant applications. The equipment (meter and radio) are now obsolete, few spares exist and must be replaced. EnerNex was engaged to provide support related to applying IntelliGrid Architecture methodologies and technologies to the monitoring system replacement project. EnerNex is providing training, document review, requirements gathering, architectural development, system design, system implementation, effectiveness evaluation and project documentation. The end objective is a functional specification for a replacement system, utilizing alternatives identified from the “open systems” approach of the IntelliGrid Architecture, leading to readiness for RFPs to be issued. EnerNex is providing support in:
- Project requirements development
- Review of technologies selected for use in the myPower Pilot Program
- Assist in the development of supporting enterprise architecture
- Documentation of the application of IntelliGrid to the project
- Security policy development
- Delivery of technology workshops
