Green Button Demo at Grid-Interop
Erich Gunther, Chairman and CTO of EnerNex, and Anto Budiardjo, President and CEO of Clasma Events, demonstrate the power of standards to foster rapid innovation. In this case mere weeks to days after being provided a set of example code that implements the NAESB ESPI standard and sample data sets, multiple vendors provided web site, hardware, and software to implement Aneesh Chopra’s Green Button concept that Erich and Anto demonstrated in real time at Grid-Interop.

EnerNex was the technical lead and organizer for the Grid-Interop Plug-In event which will be hosted by Clasma in Phoenix, AZ, December 6-8, 2011.

About Smart Grid Labs

EnerNex’s Smart Grid Labs (SGL) is on its way to becoming one of the premier testing and evaluation facilities in the country, providing multi-faceted services related to communications, security, standards compliance, technology/vendor maturity, and implementation with a wide range of laboratory capabilities for utilities and product vendors. Additionally, we have mutual relationships with other premier testing facilities to provide regionally more accessible, more functional, or appropriate services anywhere in North America.
To date, our 61850 interoperability testing has been for specific utilities and is generally performed at a utility staging site. For some of our vendor technology evaluations for utilities, vendor interoperability pre-certification testing, product design support and cyber security testing, we have been using our existing non-dedicated facilities. We are presently expanding our Knoxville headquarters location to include our dedicated lab facility to support our growing SGL business unit.
In the rendering above, the large central area is our “Showcase Lab,” modeled after a similar lab at Consumers Energy in Jackson, Michigan where we participated in its development and provided a variety of engineering services. It allows for end-to-end Smart Grid device interoperability testing and demonstration in a familiar environment. This part of the facility simulates a utility substation, control center, home service entrance, utility areas (washer, dryer, water heater), kitchen, and living areas. The smaller area behind it is the “Working Lab” where we work with individual devices of all types in a safe and secure electrical laboratory environment.
