Power Industry Years: 5

Education: Ph.D., Electrical Engineering, Tennessee Technological University; M.S., Electrical Engineering, Tennessee Technological University; Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in Hyderabad, India.

Expertise:
power system reliability studies, power system design, distributed generation, transmission systems, distribution systems.

Previously, Chandra was employed as an electrical design engineer at Design Bureau Consultants Pvt. Limited in India. There she worked on the development of one line diagrams for indoor and outdoor substations. She calculated illumination levels for indoor and outdoor lighting, residential and commercial areas, schools, hospitals, laboratories, warehouses and industrial facilities. She also designed power distribution, fire alarm systems, security and emergency power systems.

Chandra worked on a research project to develop a lightning channel model. This model would help to understand the physical nature of lightning and aims at the protection of electrical power systems from the harmful effects of lightning. She worked on a research project for the U.S. Department of Energy to determine the feasibility of electric power transmission and distribution in Tennessee by dc superconducting cables.

She has worked on design and economic analysis of extra high-voltage (EHV) ac and dc overhead lines and underground cables, as well as the estimation of flashover rates of a single conductor overhead power line caused by direct and indirect lightning strikes. Her experience also includes the design of substation shielding against lightning using shield wires and masts and transient voltage distribution on an energy storage magnet.
